What is a PEM Electrolyzer Cells & Stack?

A PEM electrolyzer cell is the core electrochemical assembly of a PEM hydrogen generation system — a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) compressed between flow field plates, current collectors and end plates, forming a single electrolysis cell. When a DC voltage above the thermodynamic threshold is applied, water fed to the anode is split into oxygen, protons and electrons. Protons cross the proton exchange membrane to the cathode, where they recombine with electrons to produce high-purity hydrogen.

Single cells are the starting point for MEA evaluation, membrane characterisation and electrochemical research. Multi-cell stacks connect individual cells in series to multiply the hydrogen output — a 5-cell stack produces five times the output of a single cell at the same current, at a proportionally higher voltage. Stack assemblies in the HPEC range are available from 2-cell configurations up to 50-cell assemblies producing 10 Nm³/hr.

HPEC cells and stacks require an external DC power supply matched to the specified working voltage and current rating of the assembly. They do not include a power supply, pressure regulation or safety systems — these are provided by the researcher or integrated into the custom system. Output pressure ranges from 0–5 bar on standard MEA cell formats up to 32 bar on high-pressure stack configurations, making HPEC assemblies suitable for both atmospheric and pressurised hydrogen generation applications.

MEA sizes in the HPEC range include 50×40mm, 50×60mm, 70×70mm and 140×70mm active areas — each suited to different current densities, flow rates and research objectives. Hydrogenergy supplies HPEC cells and stacks across the full range with technical guidance on MEA selection, power supply matching and system integration.

Frequently asked questions

What DC power supply is required for HPEC cells and stacks?
Each HPEC assembly has a specified working voltage range and rated current. For example, the HPEC-7070 operates at DC 1.9–2.5V at 73.5A, while the HPEC-10 stack requires DC 57–80V at 765A. A regulated DC power supply matched to these parameters is required and is not included with the cell or stack. Hydrogenergy can recommend a suitable DC power supply for any HPEC model on request.
What is the difference between a cell and a stack in the HPEC range?
A single cell contains one MEA between two flow field plates — it produces hydrogen at the rated flow for that MEA size. A stack connects multiple cells in series between a single pair of end plates — increasing output proportionally with cell count while sharing the same current. HPEC stacks are identified by the MEA size and cell count in brackets, for example HPEC-1000 uses a 50×60mm MEA in a 5-cell configuration.
What output pressure do HPEC cells produce?
Standard HPEC MEA cell formats (50×40mm, 50×60mm, 70×70mm) produce hydrogen at 0–5 bar or 0–30 bar depending on the variant. High-pressure HPEC stack configurations produce hydrogen at 32 bar — suitable for pressurised storage applications or bypassing a downstream compressor. Select the pressure variant based on your downstream system requirements.
What MEA sizes are available in the HPEC range?
The HPEC range covers four active MEA sizes: 50×40mm (entry-level single cell, 138–300 mL/min per cell), 50×60mm (mid-range, 311 mL/min per cell, scalable to 2000 mL/min in 10-cell stacks), 70×70mm (high-output, 1.5 L/min per cell, scalable to 10 L/min in 10-cell stacks), and 140×70mm (industrial, 0.5–1 Nm³/hr per cell). MEA size determines current density, flow rate and the physical dimensions of the assembly.
Can HPEC cells be used with solar or variable DC input?
Yes — PEM electrolyzer cells respond quickly to variable DC input, making them well suited for solar-coupled electrolysis research. Connect the HPEC cell directly to a solar panel array or MPPT charge controller matched to the cell's voltage and current rating. This is a standard configuration for solar-to-hydrogen research at universities and energy research institutions. For intermittent or widely variable input, a DC-DC converter or buffer capacitor may improve stack lifetime.
