What is a PEM Electrolyzer System?

A PEM electrolyzer system is a complete, self-contained hydrogen generation unit built around a PEM electrolyzer stack. Unlike bare electrolyzer cells that require an external DC power supply and system integration, a PEM electrolyzer system includes everything needed to produce hydrogen from a standard AC mains connection — integrated rectifier and power supply, stack assembly, gas-liquid separator, pressure regulation, safety shutoff, and a controlled hydrogen outlet.

HPES systems operate on single phase AC mains (230V, 50Hz) and deliver hydrogen at a defined outlet pressure — either regulated low pressure (0.2–4 bar) for direct instrument or test bench supply, or at 16 bar for applications requiring higher delivery pressure. Industrial HPES systems (1–10 Nm³/hr) deliver hydrogen at 35 bar with full balance-of-plant integration.

The HPES range covers flow rates from 160 mL/min to 10 Nm³/hr — making it suitable for analytical instrument supply, fuel cell test benches, hydrogen safety research, pilot-scale hydrogen generation and industrial hydrogen supply applications. All HPES systems produce hydrogen at >99.9% purity directly at the outlet under normal operating conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in an HPES electrolyzer system?
An HPES system includes the PEM electrolyzer stack, integrated AC power supply and rectifier, gas-liquid separator, pressure regulation and safety shutoff, outlet pressure gauge, and all necessary internal pipework and controls. The system connects directly to a water supply and AC mains — no external DC supply, no separate BOP components required. Water quality requirements and installation specifications are provided with each unit.
What outlet pressure do HPES systems deliver?
HPES systems are available in three pressure configurations. Low-pressure models deliver hydrogen at 0.2–4 bar regulated output — suitable for direct instrument supply and test bench connections. Mid-pressure models deliver at 16 bar — suited for applications requiring higher delivery pressure or short-run storage. Industrial models (HPES-1 to HPES-10) deliver at 35 bar with full BOP integration for pilot and industrial-scale applications.
What water quality does an HPES electrolyzer system require?
PEM electrolyzer systems require deionised (DI) water — typically with resistivity of 1 MΩ·cm or better. Tap water or distilled water is not suitable as dissolved ions contaminate the membrane and degrade performance. A small DI water supply or inline DI water polisher is required as part of the installation. Contact Hydrogenergy for water quality specifications for each model.
What hydrogen purity do HPES systems produce?
All HPES systems produce hydrogen at >99.9% purity at the outlet under normal operating conditions. For applications requiring 99.999% (5N grade) — such as gas chromatography carrier gas or sensitive fuel cell testing — an inline desiccant dryer and purifier downstream of the system outlet is recommended.
What is the lead time for HPES electrolyzer systems?
Standard HPES models carry a lead time of 4–8 weeks from order confirmation. Industrial systems (HPES-1 to HPES-10) may require 8–12 weeks depending on specification and availability. Lead times are confirmed at the quotation stage. Contact Hydrogenergy for current stock availability on specific models
