What is a MEA & CCM?

A membrane electrode assembly (MEA) is the complete electrochemical core of a PEM fuel cell or electrolyzer — combining the proton exchange membrane, catalyst layers and gas diffusion layers into a single, ready-to-assemble unit. A catalyst coated membrane (CCM) is the intermediate component: membrane with catalyst layers applied to both faces, without the GDLs bonded on.

MEAs are supplied in 3, 5 or 7 layer configurations. A 3-layer MEA consists of the CCM alone (membrane plus two catalyst layers). A 5-layer MEA adds GDLs bonded to both faces of the CCM, ready for direct stack assembly. A 7-layer configuration adds sub-gaskets for sealing and handling, providing a complete, edge-protected assembly for production-scale stack manufacturing.

CCMs are used when the GDL needs to be selected or evaluated independently from the membrane and catalyst specification — common in research and custom stack development. Full MEAs are used when a complete, ready-to-assemble electrochemical unit is required for production stack builds. Both formats are available for PEM fuel cells and PEM electrolyzers, with active area, catalyst loading and membrane thickness customised to your application.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 3-layer, 5-layer and 7-layer MEA?
A 3-layer MEA is the CCM only — membrane with catalyst on both faces. A 5-layer MEA adds GDLs bonded to both sides, ready for stack assembly. A 7-layer MEA adds sub-gaskets for sealing and edge protection, providing the most complete, handling-ready configuration for production stack builds.
Should I order a CCM or a full MEA?
Order a CCM if you want to select or test your own GDL independently — common in research settings. Order a full MEA (5 or 7 layer) if you need a complete, ready-to-assemble unit for stack production, minimising assembly steps and ensuring consistent GDL-to-catalyst interface quality.
Can MEAs be customised for active area and catalyst loading?
Yes — MEA and CCM dimensions, catalyst loading, and membrane specification can all be customised to your stack design. Provide your active area, target current density and catalyst loading requirements when requesting a quotation.
Are MEAs available for both fuel cells and electrolyzers?
Yes — fuel cell MEAs and electrolyzer CCMs differ in catalyst formulation, membrane specification and operating conditions. Electrolyzer CCMs must withstand the oxidising environment at the anode and higher differential pressures than fuel cell MEAs. Specify your application when ordering.
What membrane types are used in these MEAs?
MEAs and CCMs in this range use proton exchange membranes suited to PEM fuel cell and electrolyzer applications, including DuPont-type ionomer membranes. Membrane thickness and ionomer content can be specified based on your performance and durability requirements.
