Enquire directly →What is a MEA & CCM?
A membrane electrode assembly (MEA) is the complete electrochemical core of a PEM fuel cell or electrolyzer — combining the proton exchange membrane, catalyst layers and gas diffusion layers into a single, ready-to-assemble unit. A catalyst coated membrane (CCM) is the intermediate component: membrane with catalyst layers applied to both faces, without the GDLs bonded on.
MEAs are supplied in 3, 5 or 7 layer configurations. A 3-layer MEA consists of the CCM alone (membrane plus two catalyst layers). A 5-layer MEA adds GDLs bonded to both faces of the CCM, ready for direct stack assembly. A 7-layer configuration adds sub-gaskets for sealing and handling, providing a complete, edge-protected assembly for production-scale stack manufacturing.
CCMs are used when the GDL needs to be selected or evaluated independently from the membrane and catalyst specification — common in research and custom stack development. Full MEAs are used when a complete, ready-to-assemble electrochemical unit is required for production stack builds. Both formats are available for PEM fuel cells and PEM electrolyzers, with active area, catalyst loading and membrane thickness customised to your application.
